New York City, NY

Statue of Liberty and New York City

As a result of overly broad legislation, most forms of short-term rentals are outlawed in New York City even with high demand and an expensive hotel market.

The legislation:

    • Restricts the ability of people to rent their entire home in a Class A Multiple Dwelling for fewer than 30 consecutive days.
    • But does allow people to rent a private room within the home to a “lawful border.

The legislation hasn’t stopped the existence of short-term rentals in the city, despite the threat of fines and penalties. The ban limits options for visitors and forces short-term renters underground. STRAC NYC is working with local residents and short-term rental providers to share information, establish best practices, and advance smart short-term rental regulation that benefits all stakeholders.

The Committee for Short-Term Rental Reform is another organization that is doing advocacy work in New York.
